ISU Audio & Arduino Clubs
Projects - Fall 2026 / Spri 2027
To obtain a kit, request one in person from G. Tuttle at a club meeting or send a request to him at gtuttle@iastate.edu.
There are a few miscellaneous parts – power sources, cables, connectors, etc. – that are useful in many of the projects. You may already have some of these parts at home. Or you can buy them from G. Tuttle. Or order them online.
Audio
- Altoids headphone amp. Parts cost for club members: $10.
This is a small and simple amp that can be used to boost an audio signal to a set of wired headphones. The Altoids amp is a greater "starter project" – a real amp that is easy to build. It is a great project for learning how to solder. - GTDT desktop amp. Parts cost for club members: $10.
The GTDT is a low-power Class B amp this is adequate for driving a set of desktop speakers. It is a step up from the Altoids amp – in fact, it is essentially an Altoids amp with some output transistors added to boost the power. It works well the ACD speakers listed below. This is fairly easy build – a small step up from the Altoids amp. - 3122 Class-D amp. Parts cost for club members: $15.
Very similar in use to the GTDT amp, but works using Class D amp principles, which are completely different from old-school Class B amps. Also a good match to the ACD speakers. Slightly more output power than the GTDT, but not enough to make difference. Also, a fairly easy build. - Audio Club Desktop speakers. Parts cost for club members: $100 or $140, depending on components.
The ADC speakers are a pair of small desktop (or bookshelf) speakers. The club kit derives from a famous do-it-yourself speaker design that has been built thousands of times. (Audio Club members have built dozens over the years.) For their size, these speakers sound very nice. The project is a good introduction to speaker design and construction. In terms of skills required, the project is a big step up from the little amps listed above. The project does have some soldering, but also requires assembly of the wooden speaker enclosures. Pairing these speakers with the GTDT or the 3122 Class D amp makes for a very nice little audio system.
